The Phoenix Scholar House has a unique and innovative educational program that supports your educational journey with affordable housing options. Education is the primary requirement to enable the head of household to reach self-sufficiency. This model was designed after the Family Scholar House, a nonprofit organization based in Louisville, Kentucky. The program is dedicated to helping single-parent families to achieve economic independence through education. They have a proven track record of success, with a high percentage of participants achieving stable housing and employment after exiting the program.

Application Process

The participant must apply for and be accepted into the educational component of the Scholar House Program to qualify for the secondary part of the program, housing. The housing and educational programs are administered as one program. The housing depends on the participant’s successful participation and continuation in the education component.

  1. Candidates must complete the online interest form

  2. The candidate will be scheduled to attend an in-person orientation and interview process.

  3. Upon completion of orientation, candidates must ensure they complete all items on the pre-residential provided checklist. Applicants will be scored by a point system established by the Scholar House on the completion of tasks.

  4. Upon successful completion of the pre-residential requirements, the candidate and family have the opportunity to move into the housing unit.

Educational Eligibility Requirements

  • Single parents, single women in the last trimester of their pregnancy or single family members with primary custody of his/her child(ren).

  • Participants must currently be, or enrolled to be, full-time or part-time students in pursuit of a degree or specialty program at an institution of higher learning.

  • Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Participants must have a high school degree or GED.

  • Participants must have a source of income or employment.

  • Candidates must complete entry applications and interviews. All candidates will be approved or declined through a set application process.

  • Successful education is the primary goal of the program:

    • Participants must sign a Program Agreement .
    • Participants must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA for the semester.
    • Participants must attend classes regularly.
    • Participants must provide a copy of schedule and grades to their case manager at the end of the quarter/semester.
    • Participants who do not maintain the education qualifications may be excluded from the benefits of the scholar house program.
